You sit down for a brow clean-up and are asked whether you want it threaded or waxed. Most people pick whichever they had last time. This guide, from L’Amour Luxe in Kharghar, covers which method suits which part of your face and body, and when to skip waxing.

Threading and waxing, in plain terms

Threading lifts hair out with a twisted cotton thread, a few hairs at a time. Waxing spreads a thin layer of warm wax over the skin and pulls it away with the hair stuck in it.

The difference that matters is area. A thread follows a line, so it suits small, shaped places. Wax covers a patch in one go, so it suits larger ones.

Brows: threading usually wins

A brow is a shape, and the shape is the point. Threading works hair by hair along an edge. That is why it is the usual choice when you want a clean arch and a clear line.

Shaping is a conversation, so bring a photo of a brow you like and say how much hair you want to keep. A light tidy that leaves most of your own shape is a fair request.

The American Academy of Dermatology describes threading as as precise as plucking but much faster, and says it causes little irritation. If you have never had your brows shaped, start there.

Upper lip and face: a closer call

For the upper lip, the chin and the fine hair at the sides of the face, either method works. Threading is quick and leaves a crisp edge. Wax clears the whole patch in one pull.

Your skin is the tiebreaker. If it flushes easily, threading is the gentler place to begin. If your upper lip stays blotchy for hours after a wax, say so at the next visit and choose differently.

Arms, legs and larger areas: wax

Threading is not suitable for large areas, as the same AAD page puts it. Nobody wants to sit through a leg thread. For arms, legs, underarms and the back, wax is the practical choice.

The carte lists imported liposoluble wax as standard, with bead wax for sensitive and intimate areas and Rica wax for a full body. Strips, spatulas and applicators are opened for you and discarded afterwards, and waxing is worked in gloves. Waxing for men is available at its own rate.

How each one feels, and how long it lasts

Neither is painless. Threading is a run of small, sharp tugs along a line. Wax is one broader pull, and it is over in a second.

The AAD says threading results can last four to five weeks. How long a wax lasts depends on your own hair, so ask at your appointment and trust that answer over a number from a website.

If you are still undecided

Start with the area, then think about your skin. A small, shaped place points to thread, and a large place points to wax. Skin that flushes easily, or a medicine on your shelf, can change the answer.

At L’Amour Luxe the skin consultation is read in daylight, because artificial light hides pigmentation and true skin tone. Tell us what you use on your face and what you have taken lately, and we will say which method makes sense for you.

It is also fine to use one method on one area and the other elsewhere. Plenty of people thread their brows and wax their arms, and there is no rule against it.

Before and after a wax

Wax grips well when the hair is neither too short nor too long. The AAD gives about a quarter to three-quarters of an inch as the guide.

A quick look at your own hair before you book can save a wasted visit. If it has been shaved or trimmed very recently, it may be worth waiting.

Newly waxed skin can be red and irritated for a short while. Loose clothes, cool water and an oil-free moisturiser are the sensible habits afterwards, and a hot shower can wait until the next day.

When to skip waxing

Waxing is not for everyone on every day. The AAD advises against it if you use tretinoin or antibiotics, which thin the skin, or have taken isotretinoin in the past six months. If you are unsure about a medicine you take, ask your doctor before you book.

Skin that is sunburnt, broken or very sensitive should wait too. Redness or swelling that lasts more than two days after a wax is a reason to see a doctor.

Threading has a limit of its own. It is for small areas, and it is not the way to clear an arm or a leg.

Timing it around Diwali or a wedding

Book brows two or three days before the day, not on the morning of it. That leaves time for any redness to settle, and for a second look if one side needs a touch more.

If hair, nails and draping are all on the list, the week-by-week Diwali guide shows how to order them. Feet have their own rhythm in how often to get a pedicure.
