Gel or acrylic nails in Kharghar, and what each costs you

Gel is a soft resin brushed on in thin coats and cured hard under a UV or LED lamp. Nothing is mixed at the last second: it goes on ready, and the lamp does the work.

Acrylic starts differently. A liquid and a powder are mixed together right at the nail, and the mixture hardens in the air as it's shaped, with no lamp involved.

Neither is a smarter buy than the other. They are two different chemistries. That difference decides how each wears and how each comes off, not which one costs more on the day.

Acrylic is the harder, more rigid material of the two. That's why it's usually the choice for real length or a reshaped nail bed. Rigid also means it doesn't bend, so when it does give way, it tends to crack rather than flex.

Gel is softer and more flexible. That suits hands that are in and out of water, on a keyboard, or busy all day. It tends to wear down gradually at the edges rather than snap, though a hard knock can still chip the surface.

Neither one is indestructible, whatever the reel you saw promised. A door slammed on the wrong finger will find the weak point in either material.

This is the step that decides more than either material does on its own. Gel is meant to soak off: acetone-soaked cotton, wrapped in foil, given time to loosen the bond before anything is touched.

Acrylic takes more work to remove safely. It's filed down first to break the seal, then soaked the same way. Forcing it off in one piece takes layers of the natural nail with it.

The most common repair walking into the polish arch in Sector 20 isn't a broken tip. It's a nail thinned by being picked or peeled off at home instead of properly soaked and filed.

Underneath either set, the nail spends weeks sealed away from the air, which softens it slightly. That's normal, not a sign anything has gone wrong. It settles back within a few days once the set comes off.

What actually thins a nail plate is rarely the product itself. It's wear without a break, or removal rushed at home instead of soaked off properly. Either one asks more of the nail than gel or acrylic ever does on its own.

A short rest between sets, even just a week or two bare, gives the nail a chance to catch up. It isn't required after every set, but it's worth asking for if yours have started to feel thin.

Neither set is a one-and-done booking. As the natural nail grows, the product shifts away from the cuticle, and an infill fills that gap rather than starting the whole set again.

Gel infills tend to come round every two to three weeks. Acrylic can often stretch further, closer to three to four weeks. That's one reason regulars across Navi Mumbai tend to settle on one material and stay with it.

The number quoted on the first visit is never the whole number across a season, once infills are counted in. That's worth asking before you choose a set, not after, and it's exactly the kind of thing worth raising at the consultation.

If your natural nails are already lifting, splitting or peeling, neither set is doing you a favour this week. Both need a reasonably sound nail underneath to hold onto, and building on top of a weak one just delays dealing with it.

The honest move, if that's where you are, is a bare manicure and a short rest first, then a proper set once the nail underneath has caught up. It costs you a few weeks, not the option itself.
